Bungie's Troubled Action Game Marathon Is Gaining Momentum
The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's much-anticipated project, has reared its head again with the announcement of a closed technical test scheduled to run later this month.
A Rocky Development Journey
First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Marathon has undergone a tumultuous development cycle. In October 2024, the developer stated plans were to begin alpha testing during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the project was re-revealed in spring with a planned September release. However, after some playtests led to negative feedback, Bungie announced in June that it was postponing the game's launch.
Avoiding Past Mistakes
Despite the title has already seen its fair share of issues, the development team appears determined to ensure their project doesn't suffer the same outcome as other games. Now, it appears the project's progress is finally getting back on track, as Bungie just revealed that it has run "several closed playtests to collect player input on Marathon" since this past summer. The studio is opening the doors a bit wider, enabling additional participants to catch a glimpse of the game via an upcoming "closed technical test."

"That said, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a portion of what's planned for Marathon's full release, focused on the initial gameplay moments."

But for players who don't qualify for the trial (or cannot participate), there's positive developments: Bungie says a public update on the state of the game is the following item on the schedule once the test is over.
