Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's legal representative entered the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the proceedings terminated for multiple factors including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was charged soon after the former president pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they aimed to present various motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly designated to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's case was initially overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional rival - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was accompanied by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the court read his rights and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the election effort.

While in office, the director caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

The federal government claim James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, hinder and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey published to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are costs to challenging the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "So let's have a court case."

The charges against James Comey came after Donald Trump shared on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and other people.
