From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric

Administration officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.

“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.

Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure

But, some conservative commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Statement

Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
