Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
