Youth Discovered Deceased Following Untrue Allegations of Taking Ashes
A teenage youth was discovered deceased just days following being wrongly accused of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's parents found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Start
The investigation heard how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if her son was her offspring. The message added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the property was not taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Mental Health Effect
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son told her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that one young adult urged Kai to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he died, describing how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is completely devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's parents' landline and provided a message saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they never receive that communication.
Official Finding
Lead coroner informed the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was released whilst investigations continued."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization led to or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to discern his intent."
